How Sustainability Experience and Volunteering Can Boost Your CV | Roast Jobs

Volunteering abroad: how to improve my CV

Last week, the world celebrated Environment Day, a moment to reflect on how we care for our most valuable home : our planet. How often do we stop and truly ask ourselves, how are we taking care of it?

I know how life gets busy. Between work, study, family, and the everyday life, it’s easy to forget that the Earth needs a bit of care too. But to be honest with you, you don’t need to turn your life upside down to make a difference.

In fact, it’s the small, consistent habits that help build a healthier world and a better version of you. It all starts with small daily decisions like turning off the tap, volunteering, saying no to plastic bags, walking instead of driving short distances.

Here’s a quick reality check with some simple examples:

Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth: Imagine it: You can save around 12 liters of water each time. Now, do that twice a day for a month. That’s more than 700 liters saved, just from one habit.

– Walking instead of driving for short distances: Choosing to walk 10 minutes a day instead of using a car or taking a public transportation avoids more than 25 kg of CO₂ emissions per month and helps you stay active too.

Using a reusable bottle or bag: Saying no for disposable plastic items daily saves over 30 single-use products per month that’s hundreds in a year.

  • Unplugging electronics overnight : Some devices consume energy even when not in use. Unplugging 3 items each night can save over 30 kWh a year, enough to power a fridge for an entire month.

These examples show that you don’t need to change everything to make a difference. It’s more about doing small things with intention, and doing them often. It’s consistency that builds real impact.

According to experts, it takes about 21 days to form a new habit. So start small, stay steady, and soon enough, you won’t even think about it, it’ll just be part of your routine automatically.

And if volunteering has been on your mind, this is the perfect time to go for it, especially because sustainability is becoming a key value in many hospitality companies. More and more recruiters are looking for candidates who care about people and the planet. Showing your environmental commitment can really help you stand out.

Here’s how you can reflect that impact on your CV:

1. Mention sustainability in your job descriptions
Have you ever worked in an eco-hotel, joined a beach cleanup, or helped a local community reduce waste? Mention it proudly, these experiences show your values and can really catch an employer’s eye.

2. Add relevant certifications or training
Whether it’s first aid, environmental protection, or cultural awareness, adding certifications shows that you’re proactive and open to learning. And many are free online

3. Include your volunteer work as real experience
Volunteer work develops key skills such as teamwork, leadership, adaptability and deserves a spot on your CV.

4. Use sustainability-focused keywords
Words like eco-conscious, green initiatives, social impact, or community involvement are powerful and get noticed in job searches.

5. Highlight soft skills gained
Volunteering teaches empathy, cross-cultural communication, flexibility, and problem-solving—all essential in the hospitality industry.

You don’t need to wait for the world to change. Be the change. Be the one who inspires others by living with care and intention.
