You’ve probably thought about it more than once.
“Maybe I should work abroad for a few months.”
You look at destinations. You start searching for jobs abroad with accommodation and imagining what life there could be like. Maybe you’re thinking about working abroad for the first time, so you send an opportunity to a friend and say, “Imagine if we actually did this.”
For a moment, you’re excited. Then the questions start.
At Roast Jobs, we see this hesitation all the time. There are many more people thinking about working abroad than people who actually take the next step.
And we understand why.
Moving to another country is a big decision. You’re leaving what you know, starting a new job and building a temporary life somewhere completely different. Even when you’re looking at jobs abroad with accommodation, there are still plenty of things to think about before you go.
Having doubts doesn’t mean you don’t really want to go. Usually, there are simply questions you don’t have answers to yet.
So, let’s talk about some of them.
1. What If I Choose the Wrong Country?
When there are so many options, it’s easy to spend months trying to find the “perfect” destination.
But there probably isn’t one. Instead, think about what matters to you.
- Do you want to improve your English?
- Learn another language?
- Live near a city?
- Experience a winter season?
- Save money?
- Meet international people?
Mistake to avoid: choosing a destination just because it’s popular on social media or because your friend chose it.
Instead of asking “What’s the best country?”, you should ask: “What do I want from this experience?”
The answer will make choosing your destination much easier.
2. What If My English Isn’t Good Enough?
You don’t necessarily need perfect English to start an international experience.
You do, however, need enough to understand instructions, communicate with your team and manage everyday situations.
And yes, you’re probably going to make mistakes.
You might forget a word while speaking and have to explain it with other words or even use your hands. Lol That’s completely normal when learning a new language.
Mistake to avoid: waiting until your English feels “perfect.”
Be honest about your current level and check the language requirements for the job. Living abroad will give you many chances to use the language every day.
You won’t improve overnight, but with regular practice, you’ll get better over time
3. What If Something Goes Wrong?
Maybe the job isn’t exactly how you imagined it. Maybe you feel homesick. Maybe you don’t really like the local food.
These things can happen. Working abroad isn’t a holiday, and not every day will be easy.
That’s why it’s important to understand what you’re accepting before you leave.
Ask about your working hours, responsibilities, salary, accommodation, meals, location and contract. Read the information you’re given and ask questions when something isn’t clear.
Mistake to avoid: saying yes because you’re excited and worrying about the details later.
Knowing what to expect won’t guarantee that everything will be perfect. But it can help you set realistic expectations and avoid unnecessary frustration later.
4. What If I Move Abroad and Hate It?
Maybe you arrive and realise the destination isn’t for you. Maybe you miss home more than you expected. Maybe hospitality isn’t something you want to do long term.
That doesn’t automatically make the experience a failed.
You’ll still have tried something new, worked in another country, met different people and learned more about what you want and what you don’t.
Mistake to avoid: thinking that going abroad means you have to love every part of it.
Sometimes discovering that something isn’t for you is useful too.
5. What If My Accommodation Isn’t What I Expected?
If accommodation is included or arranged with your job, ask about it before accepting the opportunity.
Will you share a room? How far is it from work? How much does it cost? What’s included? Who will you live with?
Mistake to avoid: assuming what your accommodation will be like without asking.
Staff accommodation can be simple. You’re probably not moving into a five-star suite just because you’re working in a five-star hotel. 😄
6. What If I Don’t Go and Keep Wondering About It?
If you’ve been thinking about working abroad for months. Remember, being ready doesn’t mean having zero doubts.
One thing we’ve learned from our experience is that sometimes it’s better to try something and discover it’s not for you than to spend years wondering, “What if I had tried?”
Maybe you’ll realise it isn’t for you. Or maybe it will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made.
The only way to really know is to try.
At Roast Jobs, we’d love to see more people who have been thinking about working abroad finally discover what the experience is actually like instead of spending another year waiting for the “perfect moment.”
And if you decide to give it a try, we’ll be there to support you before and during your experience abroad.
