“My English isn’t perfect. Maybe I should wait.”
Does this sound familiar?
Many candidates want to become an Au Pair France, Australia, Ireland and more, but they keep waiting because they don’t feel confident enough with their English or language skills.
“I’ll apply when my English is better.”
“Maybe next year I’ll be more fluent.”
But here’s the truth: you don’t need perfect English to start. You need to communicate, be understood and be willing to learn.
There is a phrase often attributed to Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector that reminds us that nobody is born knowing how to live. We need the courage to try and the humility to learn along the way.
The same is true when you move abroad. You don’t need to know everything before you start. You learn by speaking, making mistakes, asking questions and trying again.
Do I Need Fluent English to Become an Au Pair?
No. Your English doesn’t need to be perfect or completely fluent.
However, you do need enough English to communicate with your host family and understand each other.
As an au pair, you’ll spend a lot of time with children. You’ll need to understand their routine, talk with their parents, ask questions and explain simple things.
You may forget a word or need someone to repeat a sentence. That’s okay.
Good communication is more important than perfect grammar.
Will My English Improve While Living Abroad?
Yes! Your daily life will become one of your best English lessons.
You’ll speak English at breakfast, while playing with the children, at the supermarket and when meeting new people.
Children can also be great teachers. They use everyday words, repeat things and aren’t usually afraid to correct you!
At first, speaking another language every day can feel difficult. But little by little, you’ll notice a difference.
You’ll understand more. Speaking will feel more natural. And you’ll start feeling more confident.
What If I’m Afraid of Making Mistakes?
Make them!
Mistakes are a normal part of learning a language.
You don’t need to know every word before you start speaking. Listen, try, make mistakes, learn something new and try again.
Instead of trying to speak perfect English, be curious.
Ask questions when you don’t understand. Learn new words from the children. Don’t be afraid to laugh when you say something wrong.
Remember: confidence doesn’t always come before you start. Sometimes you become confident because you started.
Why Shouldn’t I Wait Until My English Is Perfect?
Because you may always find another reason to wait.
Many people postpone their experience abroad because they hope that one day they’ll feel completely ready.
But starting something new will always feel a little scary.
Moving to another country, meeting a new family and speaking another language are big changes. You probably won’t feel 100% ready and that’s normal.
Give yourself permission to start, make mistakes and improve along the way.
Can Becoming an Au Pair Help Me Grow?
Absolutely.
Being an au pair isn’t only about improving your English. It’s also about discovering another culture, meeting new people and becoming more independent.
Some days will be easy. Other days may be challenging. But every conversation, mistake and new experience can teach you something.
So, if your English isn’t perfect, don’t let that be the reason you stay home.
Ask yourself three simple questions:
Can I communicate? Am I willing to learn? Am I ready to try?
If the answer is yes, you may already have what you need to start.
At Roast Jobs, we believe an international experience doesn’t begin when everything is perfect. It begins when you give yourself the chance to try.
Your English will improve. Your confidence will grow. And one day, you may look back and wonder why you waited so long.
You don’t need perfect English to begin your adventure. You just need to begin. And this doesn’t only apply to becoming an au pair. It’s something you can take with you into any new project, challenge or area of your life.
